The rule of thumb is: the larger the textile surface, the stronger the effect. In the living room this means encompassing the entire seating group. Sofa, armchair, coffee table: everything on the rug, or at least with the front furniture legs on it. In the dining area the rug should be large enough that chairs remain on the surface even when pulled out. 240 x 340 cm or 300 x 400 cm are not an exaggeration there, but acoustically and proportionally sensible.

Rug Underlay: The Underestimated Amplifier

A good rug underlay does more than prevent slipping. It adds a further dampening layer that absorbs vibrations before they reach the hard surface beneath. In measurements, the acoustic absorption value rises by 0.10 to 0.20 points with a suitable underlay. This is audible.

On concrete or tiles in particular, an underlay is recommended. It makes the rug softer, extends its lifespan and improves the room climate at the same time. Anyone buying a large rug should regard the underlay as a fixed part of the concept.

The Textile Room Concept: Rug Plus Curtains Plus Furniture

A rug alone is often not enough for a complete solution in strongly reverberant rooms with high ceilings, large window fronts and little furniture. The strongest effect comes from the interplay of several textile elements.

  • Curtains: Floor-length, heavy curtains dampen reflections from glass surfaces. In a loft with industrial glazing, this is one of the most effective complements to the rug.
