Why a grey rug suits almost every living room

Grey is the most flexible colour in the range. A grey rug ties the furniture together, dampens sound and brings calm into a room without drawing attention to itself. Do you have a colourful sofa, colourful artwork or wood in different tones? Grey brings it all onto a common denominator.

The most common concern when buying is whether grey ends up looking too cold or too boring. The answer lies in the undertone and the material. A warm taupe-grey in wool feels cosy right away, while a cool anthracite sets a clear, modern frame. So grey is not just grey, and this is exactly what determines whether the rug suits your room.

Light grey rug or dark grey rug: which shade of grey suits you

The basic principle is simple: room size and light play a part in the decision.

  • Small room, little daylight: A light grey rug reflects light and makes the floor appear more open. Good for a small living room or bedroom.
  • Large room, plenty of light: Here a dark grey rug is a good choice. Dark tones ground the room and give a large seating group stability.

As for undertone: warm grey tones lean slightly towards beige or taupe and go well with earthy colours. Cool grey tones lean towards blue-grey and anthracite and work well with clear colours. Look at your floor in daylight. Warm oak wood harmonises with a warm grey, while a cool screed or grey tiled floor pairs with a cool grey.

Combining a grey rug correctly: sofa, floor, wall colour

Grey and beige

The calmest combination. A rug in grey beige picks up both tones and feels warm and homely. It goes with linen, wood and natural materials and works in the living room as well as in the bedroom.

Grey and blue or navy

A cool grey combined with a blue sofa creates a fresh, clear look. White walls reinforce the effect.

Grey and black

A dark grey rug next to furniture in black, or a rug in a black-grey mix, results in a modern, urban space. Add light cushions or a throw so it doesn't become too heavy.

Grey with a grey sofa

This works if you play with the tones. Choose the rug a shade lighter or darker than the sofa, or opt for a texture with pattern so the surface stays lively.

Material guide: grey wool rug, short pile or high pile

The material determines warmth, care and price.

  • Grey wool rug: Wool insulates excellently against cold floors, is hard-wearing and, thanks to its natural lanolin, less prone to staining than plant fibres. Wool can absorb around a third of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet. The cosiest choice for the living room.
  • Grey short pile rug: Easy to care for, robust and simple to vacuum. Ideal for heavily used areas and for families with children.
  • High pile: Soft and pleasant underfoot, especially lovely in the bedroom next to the bed. Needs a bit more care than short pile.

Synthetic fibres are cheaper and available in many shades of grey, while wool costs more but lasts longer and stays beautiful for years.

The right size for your grey rug

The most common mistake is choosing a rug that's too small. As a rule of thumb, the front legs of the sofa and the coffee table should stand on the rug, with 20 to 30 cm of rug visible on both the left and right of the sofa.

Guideline sizes for Switzerland:

  • Small living room (up to 20 m²): 160 × 230 cm or 200 × 300 cm
  • Large living room (from 25 m²): 250 × 300 cm, 250 × 350 cm or 300 × 350 cm

Care and longevity: keeping your grey rug looking beautiful

A light grey can develop a grey film over time if it's not vacuumed often enough. Regular vacuuming is the most important measure, especially for light grey rugs and in heavily used areas.

For spills, absorb liquid immediately with a clean, colourless cloth and blot gently rather than rubbing. If you'd like a more relaxed approach to stains, choose a dark grey rug, as dark tones show dirt and crumbs much less.
