Living room rug: determine the right size first
The most costly mistake when buying a rug is choosing the wrong size. A rug that is too small makes the entire room look smaller and unfinished, no matter how beautiful the pattern is. That is why you determine the size first, then the color and material. As a general rule: there should be 20 to 40 cm of space between the edge of the rug and the wall, so the rug looks deliberately placed rather than thrown down at random.

- Front legs on it: The front sofa legs stand on the rug, while the back side extends into the room. The most common and flexible solution, it works in almost every living room.
- Only the coffee table on it: The rug floats freely in front of the sofa. This works in smaller rooms, but can quickly look too sparse if the rug is narrower than the sofa.
Important in all cases: the rug should extend at least 10 to 20 cm beyond the sofa on both sides. Otherwise it looks like a doormat in front of the couch.
Large rug for the living room: when to choose 200x300 cm or 300x400 cm
An example that applies to most living rooms: a 3-seater sofa with a width of 240 cm. Here, a rug 200x300 cm comfortably accommodates the front legs and extends neatly beyond the sofa on the left and right. It looks visually complete rather than too small. For this sofa size, you should not go any smaller.
In an open living-dining area, more surface area is worthwhile. Here you place a rug 300x400 cm under the entire sofa group, clearly defining the living zone against the dining area. The dining area then gets its own, usually round rug under the table. Two rugs divide the large room into two calm zones, rather than everything blending together.
In smaller rented living rooms, the wall clearance of 20 to 40 cm serves as a guide. Use it deliberately: instead of pushing the rug up to the wall, leave some floor free on the sofa side and set the edge exactly where the walkway through the room begins. This makes even a small room look tidy.
Choosing a living room rug by shape: rectangular, round or oval
The shape depends on your furniture arrangement:
- Rectangular: The safe choice in front of the sofa. A rectangular rug is very well suited for placing in front of a seating group or under a dining table, and follows the lines of most furniture.
- Round: A round rug defines the space less rigidly and works well in an interior with many straight and angular forms. Particularly strong under a round dining table or in a reading nook.
- Oval: Oval rugs bring movement and dynamism to the room. With an L-shaped sofa in the corner, an oval rug in front of the seating area breaks up the hard angles and guides the eye softly around the corner.
Wool rugs and synthetic fibers: which material suits your everyday life
Wool is the most popular natural rug material and is used most frequently. Wool rugs have a cozy appeal and are therefore particularly well suited to the living room. They feel warm underfoot and last a very long time with normal residential use. One thing to keep in mind: direct, prolonged sunlight can cause wool fibers to fade, and stains require some care.
If you live with children and pets, durable synthetic fibers are often the more practical choice. For dogs and cats, easy-to-clean fibers such as polypropylene or polyester are recommended. Polyester is considered enormously hard-wearing and abrasion-resistant, while polypropylene is odor-neutral and gentle on the skin. Synthetic fiber rugs are also often considered hypoallergenic and harbor less dust and mites than natural fibers. If you prefer softness, polyacrylic feels similar to wool and is resistant to mold and mites.
For allergy sufferers, a short-pile rug is the better choice, as high-pile rugs absorb more dirt and are harder to clean. Up to 1.5 cm pile height is considered short pile: dirt penetrates less deeply and the vacuum cleaner glides over it more easily. High pile from 1.6 cm feels softer and warmer, but absorbs more dust. In neutral tones such as beige rugs, almost any interior can be combined, while designer rugs with a clear pattern set the tone in the room. Buying a living room rug with underfloor heating: what to look out for
If you have underfloor heating, the warmth must be able to pass through the rug. Wool has very good thermal conductivity, which is why wool rugs are well suited for underfloor heating. Rugs with a short pile of up to around 1.5 cm conduct heat better than high-pile variants.
Pay attention to two values: experts recommend a thermal resistance of no more than 0.15 m²K/W. And the backing material matters: latex or textile are better suited than felt, as felt strongly dampens the heat. With synthetic fibers, it is worth checking the product information, as some fibers can bond together under heat. Also keep the rug away from direct heat sources such as fireplaces or radiators.
