- Wool: Virgin wool is antistatic and temperature-regulating, and with good quality it lasts 15 to 30 years. It is, however, susceptible to stains because liquid is absorbed quickly. New wool rugs shed fibers at first, which diminishes with regular vacuuming.
- Low pile: Pile height of approximately 5 to 15 mm, dense and flat. Low pile is easy to care for, dirt barely penetrates deeply, and furniture glides over it easily. This makes low pile well suited for chairs with castors and heavily trafficked areas.
- High pile: Pile height between 15 and 50 mm, voluminous and soft. High pile absorbs sound and improves room acoustics. On the other hand, the long pile collects more dust, requires more effort to clean and is less suitable for allergy sufferers. Many high pile rugs require a non-slip underlay.
For heavily used living areas, robust synthetic fibers such as polypropylene or polyamide are a good choice: polypropylene repels dirt naturally, polyamide scores with elasticity. Those who appreciate natural material with character will find jute a robust accent for dining and living rooms.
Caring for a rug 200x200 cm: vacuuming, stains, longevity
Care depends on the pile. Low pile rugs need only regular vacuuming in everyday use, because the low pile prevents dirt from penetrating deeply in the first place. With high pile, guide the nozzle several times in different directions, preferably with a smooth nozzle rather than a brush, so that no fibers are pulled out.
For stains: blot immediately with a clean cloth, never rub, otherwise the stain spreads and is pushed deeper into the fibers. For wool, use a vacuum cleaner with retracted bristles rather than rotating brushes. A thorough cleaning with cleaning agents once or twice a year is sufficient. After an extensive wet clean you should leave the rug untouched for at least 24 hours and ventilate the room well. Wool is best not washed, and strong rubbing should be avoided to keep it looking its best.
