Rug 170x240 cm: does this size fit your room?

The biggest question with a rug 170x240 cm is always the same: too small, too large, or ultimately out of proportion? The good news upfront: 170x240 cm is considered a medium-size format and covers a large area without overwhelming a room. As a medium-size rug, it fits reliably in living rooms, bedrooms, dining areas, and open-plan living concepts.

The most common mistake when buying a rug is choosing too small. A rug that is too small makes a furniture group look restless and random, while one that is too large can make the room appear optically smaller. 170x240 cm hits the right balance for most seating groups and beds. The key is knowing your furniture dimensions, then the size can be verified in minutes. That is exactly what we will do now, room by room.

Rug 170x240 cm in the living room: sofa, coffee table, and wall clearance

170x240 cm is considered the standard choice for medium-size living rooms with a classic seating group. As a living room rug, the format works reliably for sofas up to around 240 cm in length. A concrete example: a two-seater sofa of 210 cm and a coffee table of 100x60 cm. The rug extends around 30 to 40 cm beyond the table, and the front legs of the sofa and armchairs rest on the surface. That is enough for the group to feel connected and the room to appear calmer.

With the classic sofa placement, it is sufficient for only the front legs of the furniture to stand on the rug. Ideally, you should leave 20 to 40 cm of clearance between the rug edge and the wall, giving the surface room to breathe and making the space look tidy. From a sofa length of around 260 cm, 170x240 cm becomes tight. In that case, switching to 200x300 cm is worthwhile to maintain the right proportion.

Rug 170x240 cm in the dining room: space for table and chairs

In the dining area, a simple rule applies: chairs that are pushed back should still stand on the rug. As a guideline, the rug should extend at least 60 to 75 cm beyond each edge of the table. For a dining table of 120x80 cm seating four to six people, 170x240 cm works well laid crosswise, with the table's long axis parallel to the short side of the rug. This way the chairs remain on the surface when pushed back while getting up.

With larger dining tables from 140 cm in length, it gets tighter. In that case, 200x290 cm works better, as it leaves enough space all around for the chairs. For the typical four-to-six-person table, 170x240 cm is a solid choice.

Rug 170x240 cm in the bedroom: what works under the bed

In the bedroom, the rug is usually placed crosswise under the bed so that a warm surface to step onto extends on three sides. With a double bed 160 cm wide, 170x240 cm works very well crosswise, with around 40 cm of overhang on each side. In the morning you step directly onto the soft surface instead of cold floor.

With a double bed 180 cm wide, 170x240 cm is no longer sufficient as a full under-bed rug, because too little surface extends at the back. For this case, 200x300 cm is the more suitable size. Alternatively, you can place the rug only halfway under the foot end, in which case it still works well as a zone in front of the bed.

Medium-size rug compared to 140x200 and 200x300

To put the size in context, a look at the sizes above and below is helpful:

  • 140x200 cm: smaller format, good for a two-seater on its own or as an accent in front of the sofa. For a complete seating group it can quickly look lost.
  • 170x240 cm: the versatile middle size. Covers two-seaters to compact three-seaters, four-to-six-person tables, and double beds up to 160 cm. Lots of surface without overwhelming the room.
  • 200x300 cm: for large sofas from 260 cm, wide dining tables from 140 cm, and double beds from 180 cm. Requires correspondingly more space in the room.

In an open-plan living and dining area, 170x240 cm visually defines the living room zone from the dining area and creates order. Anyone who wants a clear zone without covering the entire floor will find this size fits the purpose.

Material and care for a rug 170x240 cm

The material determines how much everyday use the rug can handle and how much care it requires:

  • Wool: heat-insulating, temperature-balancing, and soft. Due to natural oils in the fiber, it is less susceptible to stains and absorbs little moisture, making it easy to care for. New wool rugs may shed at first, but this settles over time. With proper care, a high-quality wool rug lasts a very long time. Important: avoid alkaline cleaners, as they damage the fibers.
  • Cotton: lightweight, breathable, and skin-friendly, with a directionally stable pile and good shape retention. In 170x240 cm, machine washing is practically not possible, as the format is too large for that.
  • Viscose: silky sheen and soft feel, but less elastic and more sensitive to moisture. If it dries too slowly, mold can develop, so it is better suited to low-traffic areas.
  • Synthetics (polypropylene, polyester): durable, long-lasting, and easy to care for. Synthetic fibers harbor less dust and mites and are suitable for high-traffic zones. Many modern rugs and outdoor rugs also use these fibers.

On pile height: high-pile feels soft and warm but picks up more dust and is more demanding to clean. Low-pile is durable, easy to clean, and works better with furniture, as chairs and tables can be moved more easily. Vacuum your rug weekly, and more frequently in heavily used rooms. Blot fresh stains immediately rather than rubbing them. Prolonged direct sunlight can fade colors, and turning the rug regularly prevents uneven wear.

Non-slip underlay and installation on smooth floors

On parquet, laminate, or tiles, a rug can slip and form creases. A non-slip underlay prevents slipping and creasing, and thereby extends the rug's lifespan. Cut the mat approximately 2.5 to 5 cm smaller than the rug so that it remains invisible under the edge.

Especially in a rug 170x240 cm with a low pile, the non-slip underlay also ensures the surface lies flat and furniture can be placed cleanly. After a large-area wet clean, you should avoid walking on the rug for at least 24 hours to allow it to dry completely.
